Shaping Vietnam’s Agricultural Future with Sustainable Growth and Organic Fertilizers

Vietnam’s agriculture shifts. Farmers and policy makers work to keep soil healthy. They cut back on chemicals and use more organic fertilizers. Government plans and Dutch support boost these changes.

Vietnam’s Agricultural Landscape

Vietnam shows dynamic farming. Over 8.5 million households care for 28 million hectares. Farmers grow many crops because the climate and land vary. Vietnam exports rice, coffee, cashew, and black pepper. In 2024, exports hit $62.4 billion USD. Smart irrigation and precision farming help these exports grow.

Momentum Toward Sustainability

Vietnam steps toward sustainable farms. Organic products meet global demand and protect health. By 2023, organic farming spread over 74,540 hectares. Around 17,000 producers and 555 processors supply both local and global markets like the US and EU. The government wants organic farms to cover 2.5–3.0% of total land by 2030. This plan supports high-value, sustainable agriculture.

Fertilizer Use and Challenges

Farmers in Vietnam use a lot of fertilizers. They use three times more than the global average. Chemical fertilizers take 75% of the market. Organic fertilizers cover 25%. In Vietnam, the term “organic fertilizer” spans many natural products. True certified organics form only a small share.
In 2023, Vietnam used 11 million tons of fertilizer. Of this, 4.1 million tons came from imports. China supplies most chemicals. The US, Netherlands, and Belgium send manure granulates and other organics. Even with high fertilizer use, soil problems stay. Soil wears out and loses nutrients, acidifies, and pollutes water.

Market Transformation and Growth Prospects

Local companies, including state firms, lead Vietnam’s fertilizer market. They build factories, digital tools, and train farmers. In 2025, the market is valued at $3.55 billion. By 2030, it should reach $4.2 billion. Organic fertilizers are rising faster. They grow at about 6.7% each year between 2025 and 2030, while the overall market grows 3.47% annually.
Farmers choose precision and sustainable methods. They favor controlled-release and special types. Soil application, used by 96% of farmers in 2024, stays the main method.

Government Policies Supporting Sustainability

Vietnam sets clear targets:

  • Boost organic fertilizer production by 25% by 2025.
  • Make 30% of registered fertilizers organic by 2030.
  • Use organic fertilizers on 50% of crop areas.

Laws like the National Environmental Protection Strategy and the Soil Health and Crop Nutrition Management Plan guide these targets. The National Organic Agriculture Project (2020–2030) also plays a key role. These steps help align Vietnam with global standards. They also aim to raise exports to the US, EU, and Japan.

Opportunities for Dutch Expertise and Business

The Netherlands can help Vietnam’s green shift. Dutch firms offer:
• High-quality, nutrient-rich organic fertilizers, like manure granulates.
• Experience in sustainable farming, recycling, and modern fertilizer technology.
• Knowledge sharing and training for local farmers.

Vietnamese farmers now see that good soil care boosts yields. They seek fertilizers that match their soil. Dutch products can stand out by offering quality and tailored solutions, even if price matters.

Conclusion

Vietnam’s farming must balance yield and care for nature. Strong government backing and a global push for organic goods support this change. The fertilizer market is set for smart growth. Dutch companies have a key role in driving sustainable progress through innovative organic fertilizers.
