NN Group Enhances Sustainable Procurement to Drive Climate Action

NN Group, a leading international financial services company, is intensifying its commitment to sustainability by focusing on procuring more sustainable products and services within its operations. Procurement, a significant contributor to the company’s carbon footprint, particularly through IT, consultancy, and facility management categories, is a key area for environmental impact reduction.

From Spend-Based to Supplier-Specific Emissions Monitoring

Currently, NN Group uses a spend-based methodology to estimate emissions from purchased goods and services. Moving forward, the company plans to adopt a supplier-specific emissions reporting approach. This transition aims to improve tracking of individual suppliers’ progress in cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Suppliers under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) or those voluntarily disclosing sustainability data will provide actual emissions metrics to NN Group.

Responsible Procurement and Supplier Engagement Program

In 2024, NN Group introduced a Responsible Procurement approach concentrated initially on its Dutch units, with plans to include international units in 2025 and 2026. Central to this is the Supplier ESG Engagement Programme, designed to evaluate suppliers’ climate ambitions, net-zero targets, emissions reporting, and transition plans. The goal is to engage at least 35% of the supplier base by end-2025, encouraging existing suppliers to enhance sustainability efforts and guiding new suppliers toward setting measurable net-zero objectives.

Collaborative Decarbonization for Broader Impact

Rather than limiting procurement to only low-carbon suppliers, NN Group emphasizes engagement and collaboration with high-emission suppliers to foster decarbonization throughout the supply chain and the wider economy. While the company sets clear minimum sustainability requirements and timelines, it prefers partnership over contract termination, unless sufficient progress is not made upon contract renewal.

Aligning with Broader Climate Goals

NN Group’s sustainable procurement is part of its wider Climate Action Plan aimed at embedding sustainability across all business areas. The company leverages its substantial annual spend and supplier network to drive positive environmental change and support the global transition to a net-zero economy.
