Procuring More Sustainable Products and Services: NN Group’s Commitment to Green Procurement
On July 31, 2025, NN Group detailed its strategic focus on sustainable procurement as a core part of its broader climate action and sustainability agenda. Recognizing its substantial annual spend and extensive supplier network, NN Group leverages procurement to drive positive environmental impact through collaboration and responsible sourcing.
Focus Areas and Emissions
NN Group’s highest emission categories in procurement are IT, consultancy, and facility management services — comprising over two-thirds of supplier-related emissions, primarily linked to its Dutch business units and staff departments.
Transition from Spend-Based to Supplier-Specific Emissions Reporting
Traditionally, NN Group reported emissions using a spend-based method for purchased goods and services. To enhance accuracy and effectiveness in tracking climate progress, the company plans to shift toward supplier-specific greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data. Several suppliers already align with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) or voluntarily disclose sustainability metrics, facilitating this transition.
Responsible Procurement and Supplier Engagement Programme
Launched in 2024, NN Group’s Responsible Procurement approach initially targets Dutch operations, with international rollout slated for 2025-2026. A key pillar is the Supplier ESG Engagement Programme, designed to assess and support suppliers’ net-zero journeys by evaluating targets, transition plans, and emissions reporting.
NN Group aims to engage at least 35% of its supplier base (by spend) by the end of 2025. Existing suppliers are encouraged to improve their climate efforts, while new suppliers face suggestions for emission measurement, reporting, and net-zero target setting at contract initiation. Progress on these fronts influences contract renewals.
Collaborative Decarbonization Approach
Rather than limiting contracts exclusively to low-carbon suppliers—which might accelerate NN Group’s internal decarbonization but stall broader economic progress—the company emphasizes partnership and constructive engagement with higher-emission suppliers to foster real-world emissions reductions. Clear minimum requirements and timelines accompany this approach, with contract terminations considered if sufficient progress is not made.
Commitment to Broader Climate Action
NN Group integrates its procurement strategy into its overall climate ambitions as detailed in its latest Climate Action Plan and sustainability disclosures available on its website.
