Nearly Half of U.S. Consumers Purchase Sustainable Products, Survey Finds

A recent survey conducted by GlobeScan and reported by Trellis reveals that consumer demand for sustainable products in the United States continues to grow robustly, despite political shifts impacting environmental policies.

Key Survey Insights

  • 49% of Americans reported buying an environmentally friendly product in the past month, marking a 6% increase from 43% recorded before the recent U.S. election.
  • Only 15% showed no interest in sustainable products.
  • More than one-third of consumers wanted to purchase sustainable items but faced barriers such as high prices, limited product awareness, and scarcity of options.

What Defines Sustainable Products?

According to prior research from GlobeScan, U.S. consumers recognize sustainable products by factors such as:

  • Recycled or recyclable packaging
  • Official certifications or labels
  • Use of eco-friendly materials and ingredients

Implications for Brands

The survey underscores a significant unmet demand for accessible sustainable products. Brands that:

  • Provide credible and transparent sustainability credentials
  • Make eco-friendly options widely available and affordable

are more likely to build lasting loyalty with values-driven consumers. This trend also demonstrates that many Americans continue to use their purchasing power as a means to support environmental and social responsibility, regardless of the political environment.

About the Survey

The findings are based on responses from more than 1,000 U.S. consumers surveyed from March 25-28, 2025. —

Why This Matters

Sustainability remains a pivotal factor influencing U.S. consumer behavior. Businesses investing in meaningful sustainable offerings can expect to capture increased market share and cultivate strong consumer trust. This momentum reinforces sustainability as an essential element for future retail success.
