LANXESS Launches Sustainable Lubricant Additive for Extreme Pressure Applications
Overview
Specialty chemicals leader LANXESS has introduced an enhanced sustainable version of its well-known lubricant additive, Additin RC 2515. The new formulation is manufactured at LANXESS’s Mannheim site, which recently earned ISCC PLUS certification, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainability and climate-friendly product solutions.
Sustainability Credentials
- Over 80% renewable raw materials: The new Additin RC 2515 utilizes more than 80% sustainable inputs verified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS standard.
- Carbon footprint reduction: This upgrade achieves a 34% reduction in product carbon footprint (PCF) relative to the previous version.
- Scopeblue label: The product meets the criteria of LANXESS’s Scopeblue label, which identifies products containing at least 50% recycled or bio-based materials and having a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional alternatives.
- Mass balance approach: Production follows a sustainable mass balance methodology, further supporting traceability and environmental responsibility.
Product Performance
- Extreme pressure capability: Designed for severe operating conditions, Additin RC 2515 offers excellent lubricity and moderate sulfur activity.
- Compatibility: Its low sulfur reactivity makes it ideal for lubricating components made of non-ferrous alloys such as brass and bronze.
- Versatility: Suitable for a variety of applications including metalworking fluids, heavy metal-free extreme pressure greases, slideway lubricants, and industrial gear oils.
- Sensory profile: The additive is light-colored and low-odor, enhancing usability across lubricant formulations.
Strategic Importance
- The Mannheim facility’s ISCC PLUS certification enhances LANXESS’s ability to meet rising market demands for transparent and climate-conscious products.
- Neelanjan Banerjee, head of LANXESS’s Lubricant Additives business unit, emphasized that this innovation exemplifies how "high-performance lubricant additives and sustainability go hand in hand," offering customers a pathway to reduce their CO₂ footprints significantly.
