Haleon’s Commitment to Sustainable Packaging and Decarbonisation in Healthcare
Haleon, the consumer health giant behind brands such as Sensodyne, Centrum, and Panadol, is advancing its sustainability mission by embedding environmental goals deeply into its business strategy. With products reaching over a billion consumers globally, Haleon aims to improve health outcomes while significantly reducing its environmental footprint.
Strong Performance and Recognition in Sustainability
Haleon was ranked #34 in Sustainability Magazine’s Top 250 Sustainability Companies for 2025, reflecting remarkable progress in sustainable innovation and climate action within just over three years. Chris Low, Head of Sustainability, Procurement and Packaging, credits this achievement to dedicated teams and collaborative partners driving forward climate-conscious initiatives.
Clear Climate and Inclusion Goals
The company’s sustainability framework focuses on two core pillars:
- Health Inclusivity: Making everyday health accessible to all.
- Environmental Responsibility: Minimizing the carbon footprint across its value chain.
Haleon has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040. Specific milestones include:
- A 100% reduction in net Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, based on a 2020 baseline.
- Already achieving a 50% reduction in these emissions by 2024.
- Aiming for a 42% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 compared to 2022 levels.
Notably, Haleon has partnered with Schneider Electric and other organizations through a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement supporting new solar farms in Europe, exemplifying efforts to decarbonize its energy sources.
Decarbonising the Healthcare Supply Chain
Haleon is actively electrifying heat production, shifting to cleaner fuels, and employing carbon offsets to manage residual emissions. Transitioning to renewable electricity, both on-site and via procurement, is a key energy strategy.
Addressing Scope 3 emissions—those linked to suppliers—Haleon works collaboratively to encourage its partners’ adoption of renewable energy and sustainable practices. The company is also redesigning products to lower carbon intensity by reducing raw material usage and switching to eco-friendly packaging alternatives.
Ambitious Targets for Recycle-Ready Packaging
Haleon aims to reduce virgin petroleum-based plastic usage by 10% by 2025 and by one-third by 2030, relative to 2022 levels. Strategies include:
- Compacting packaging designs.
- Increasing the use of recycled plastics and bio-resins.
- Eliminating problematic plastics like PVC.
- Transitioning to mono-material packaging compatible with current recycling systems.
Their goal is for all packaging to be recycle-ready by 2025 and fully recyclable or reusable by 2030. About half of Haleon’s packaging is paper-based, and the company is committed to a deforestation-free supply chain by 2030, sourcing all paper from recycled or certified sustainable materials.
Leadership Perspective
Brian McNamara, Haleon’s CEO, emphasizes the company’s responsibility to leverage its global reach to break down barriers preventing people from achieving better health, while simultaneously making a positive environmental impact.
Haleon’s holistic approach to sustainability—from cutting emissions and green energy adoption to innovation in packaging—positions it as a leader in driving the healthcare industry toward a greener, more inclusive future.
