Readiness Assessment Tool: Preparing for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)

Published: April 22, 2025
Source: World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)

Overview

On April 16, 2025 the European Commission adopted a new plan. This plan, called the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030, drives the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). It sets clear goals. The plan asks that products last, be fixed, and be recycled. Soon, new Delegated Acts will list clear rules.

To help companies meet these rules, WBCSD and ERM built the Readiness Assessment Tool. This tool checks how ready companies are for ESPR.

About the Readiness Assessment Tool

This tool is a practical resource. It helps companies:

  • Check if they have the key product details required by the ESPR.
  • Find gaps and spot early steps before full rules start.
  • Score their readiness on product performance and information as stated in Articles 6 and 7.
  • Look at compliance across product parts (per Article 5(1)) and parts of a product’s life.

Features

  • Guided Excel Interface: It walks users through steps. Users enter data, and they get a clear view of their readiness.
  • Future Updates: Soon, filters will allow users to sort by product or group. These filters will match new rules in Delegated Acts.
  • Supports Digital Product Passport (DPP) Readiness: It helps firms get ready for the DPP. This step boosts transparency and reporting.

Strategic Context

The Readiness Assessment Tool is one part of a larger effort. WBCSD works to boost circular economy practices. It also builds ways to share circular data. This data is key for ESPR rules and sustainable plans.
