Advancing Sustainability through the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)
The European Union drives sustainability with the ESPR. The law boosts product life, cuts energy use, and builds a circular economy. It forms a key part of the EU’s plan for both the environment and industry.
Key Event: Ecodesign Forum Meeting in Brussels
In Brussels, the first Ecodesign Forum met on 19–20 February 2025. Nearly 130 people joined from governments, industry, NGOs, and universities. Each attendee helped shape the ESPR and energy labelling standards so that every voice stayed close and clear.
Objectives and Benefits of the ESPR
The ESPR aims to:
- Make sustainability rules in the EU work as one.
- Remove trade blocks so that all can compete.
- Spark fresh ideas and boost green design.
- Lift industrial strength while promoting eco-friendly items.
- Encourage care and reuse by supporting repair, recycling, and recycled use.
Priority Products and Measures
The Forum now charts a clear work plan. It picks priority products for new rules over the next five years. Focus areas include:
- Textiles (apparel)
- Furniture
- Steel and aluminium
- Tyres
- Energy-related products from older plans
The plan also sets close rules for:
- Scoring repairability
- Checking recyclability and recycled parts for electronics
New acts will also stop the destruction of unsold goods like clothes and shoes. This rule aims to cut waste and keep business open.
Upcoming Milestones
- April 2025: The ESPR and Energy Labelling Working Plan go live.
- July 2025: Acts to stop unsold product destruction finish.
- New criteria for Green Public Procurement will soon guide buyers for green products.
Inclusive and Transparent Development Process
All new rules come from detailed studies, impact reviews, and talks. Each step keeps the language close and fair, so even small businesses find help in the rules.
Official Statements
Jessika Roswall, European Commissioner for Environment, said the ESPR shows a firm step toward green change and a circular economy that helps both nature and industry. Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, stressed that working together cuts waste and saves resources in Europe.
