Beyond Waste: Redefining Sustainable Gifting with Upcycled Art
Cuttack-based entrepreneur Lipsa Behura is transforming waste into beautiful, eco-friendly gifts through her venture, ‘Beyond Waste’. What many consider trash—shredded fabric pieces, torn paper, coconut shells, crushed plastic bottles—becomes a canvas for creativity and sustainability in her hands. Since launching in 2022, Lipsa’s initiative focuses on upcycling everyday waste materials into unique products like scrap fabric jewellery, recycled paper diaries, coconut shell candles, and cardboard wall hangings.
The Vision Behind ‘Beyond Waste’
Lipsa, an MBA graduate from Sri Sri University, was inspired during her internship and involvement with a youth sustainability campaign to address the rapid growth and plastic consumption in the gifting industry. She recognized an opportunity to introduce environmentally responsible gifts that reduce carbon footprints and plastic waste.
“Gifts can be eco-friendly and do not have to contribute to the carbon footprint,” Lipsa emphasizes.
Crafting Sustainable and Durable Products
Her product line blends artistic design with eco-consciousness, proving that recycled materials can produce durable and aesthetically pleasing gifts. Overcoming early challenges in ensuring quality, the team perfected techniques through trial and error to recycle fabrics, paper, glass, and other materials effectively. For instance, scrap Sambalpuri fabric is expertly repurposed into jewellery, and glass bottles are upcycled into lamps.
Growing Demand for Eco-Friendly Gifting
Beyond Waste operates through a physical store in Cuttack, social media sales, and local events like Balijatra. Initially met with low demand, consumer awareness about plastic pollution and upcycling has boosted interest in these sustainable alternatives. Today, recycled paper diaries and fabric-based jewellery are among the venture’s most popular choices.
