Preparing for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): WBCSD’s Readiness Assessment Tool
On April 16, 2025, the European Commission adopted the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030. The plan sets priority groups and policy steps under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). This rule makes sustainable products common across the EU by enforcing rules on product durability, repair, recycling, and more. Each word links directly to its partner, keeping ideas close and clear.
WBCSD’s Readiness Assessment Tool: Facilitating Early Compliance
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and ERM built a Readiness Assessment Tool in Excel. The tool helps companies act now. It allows them to:
- Check key product details required by the ESPR.
- Find data or process gaps.
- Compare current reports with Article 6 and 7 ESPR needs.
- Prepare ahead for new Delegated Acts and Digital Product Passport rules.
The tool splits the product check into steps for each life stage, as Article 5(1) of the ESPR explains. Each step links words and ideas closely for simple understanding.
Future Developments
WBCSD plans to add filtering options that match new Delegated Acts. This change will let users tailor checks by product type.
WBCSD also works with the Circularity Data Exchange (CDX) project. This work links circularity data in ways that support both the ESPR and broader circular economy goals.
Why This Matters
The ESPR brings a big change that drives a more sustainable, circular economy. Early action helps companies to:
- Meet strict EU sustainability rules.
- Lower risks from non-compliance.
- Boost product appeal with clear eco-design steps.
