UBE-Maruzen Launches ISCC PLUS-Certified Sustainable EVA Products

Date: December 1, 2025
Source: Indian Chemical News

Japan’s UBE-MARUZEN POLYETHYLENE (UMP), a joint venture between UBE Group and Maruzen Petrochemical, has officially launched sustainable ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) products certified under the ISCC PLUS standard at its Chiba Plant.

Key Highlights:

  • Certification & Production:
UMP first received ISCC PLUS certification in December 2023. The EVA products are produced using biomass and circular raw materials via the mass balance method, a process that allows part of the product to be claimed as made from 100% sustainable inputs when mixed with conventional materials.

  • ISCC PLUS Certification:
This international certification ensures sustainability across the supply chain, supporting environmental responsibility and promoting greener manufacturing practices.

  • Environmental Impact:
The sustainable EVA portfolio helps minimize environmental footprint by incorporating renewable biomass and recycling waste materials. This aligns with UMP’s strategy to offer eco-friendly product choices addressing global environmental challenges.

What is the Mass Balance Method?

Under the ISCC PLUS system, the mass balance approach tracks the input of sustainable materials (biomass and circular) throughout the supply chain. It balances and credits the output, enabling companies to claim a portion of their products as sustainably produced even when mixed with traditional raw materials.

Company Statement:

“By expanding its portfolio of sustainable products, UMP aims to offer customers more environmentally conscious choices as part of its contribution to addressing global environmental challenges,” said UBE-MARUZEN POLYETHYLENE.

Context & Industry Trends:

  • Sustainability in Petrochemicals:
Sustainable polymers, such as bio-based and circular economy-driven EVA, are gaining momentum as industries push toward net-zero goals.

  • Market Implications:
ISCC PLUS certification adds market credibility, attracting environmentally conscious buyers and manufacturers focused on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) compliance.
