Old California Botanicals Revives Redlands Citrus Heritage with Sustainable Holiday Gifts

Old California Botanicals brings local citrus history into the present. Redlands residents enjoy a new way to celebrate the past with eco-friendly, citrus-inspired gifts. J.P. Beall, a family descendant, revives old recipes and designs. He uses modern, sustainable ways to make these products.

Honoring Redlands’ Citrus Legacy

J.P. Beall gets his ideas from his great-grandfather, W.L. Gill. Gill settled in Redlands in the 1910s. He invented a citrus soap for his family. Today, Beall makes the same soap using a mold from the 1920s. The signature Gill Orange Soap keeps close to its roots. It mixes essential oils with orange peel to clean and exfoliate. It also uses fruit that is often thrown away. Redlands has a warm microclimate. That climate helps grow tasty citrus that Beall uses in his work. He even repurposes fruit strips and peels to stay green.

Diverse Citrus-Inspired Product Line

Old California Botanicals started with orange soap. Today, it makes more products:

  • 18 lip balm flavors
  • Orange blossom scented candles
  • Small-batch citrus marmalades (Sweet Orange, Minneola Tangelo, Eureka Lemon)

The marmalades come from local trees. One marmalade uses fruit from trees planted by Beall’s great-grandfather. Customers use these marmalades as glazes or dessert toppings. The line also has unique fragrances. These scents come from old family samples. They bring back the “smell of California” that early visitors loved. There are also reprints of vintage family Christmas cards made with local artisans.

Community Engagement and Availability

Beall works in renewable energy by day. At night, he follows his passion. He plans new ideas like men’s fragrances. His products reach many local shops:

  • San Bernardino County Museum store
  • Citrus State Historic Park Museum store
  • Riverside Art Museum
  • Mission Inn Museum
  • Upcoming Museum of Redlands store
  • Gerard’s Market
  • Redlands Natural Market
  • Clark’s retail store

Beall will show his items at the Redlands YMCA Holiday Boutique on December 6-7, 2025. This event makes it easy for shoppers to support local heritage and green practices.
