‘Kuppai Thiruvizha’ Exhibition Showcases Reusable and Eco-Friendly Products in Chennai
In July 2025, the Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) organized ‘Kuppai Thiruvizha,’ an exhibition highlighting products made from reusable and sustainable materials. Held at Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women in Chennai, the event featured 24 stalls showcasing a vibrant array of eco-friendly goods from Chennai and other districts.
Focus on Climate Awareness and Fabric Waste
The exhibition was part of CAG’s Climate Action Month, a campaign dedicated to raising awareness and promoting efforts against climate change. A significant theme was addressing fabric waste—a pressing environmental issue driven by the fast fashion industry’s disposable culture. Exhibitors displayed innovative products such as utility kits crafted from cloth scraps sourced from tailors, palm leaf-made jewelry, reusable straws, and farm-fresh vegetables.
Highlighting the Plastic Pollution Crisis
The event’s inauguration included voices from academic and environmental leaders, including Amathul Azeez, Principal of the host college; A. Samsunisa, Coordinator of the Consumer Rights Association; S. Saroja, CAG Executive Director; and Geo Damin from Poovulagin Nanbargal. Damin emphasized the underestimated scale of plastic pollution, pointing out that the bigger environmental threat lies in the un-recyclable sachets commonly used by large industries for products such as shampoo and food. He critiqued solutions like plastic roads and bioplastics as greenwashing tactics that exacerbate microplastic pollution rather than resolve it.
Eco-Friendly Innovation in the Spotlight
‘Kuppai Thiruvizha’ not only provided a platform to promote sustainable alternatives but also encouraged public engagement with environmental issues through practical demonstrations of reusable and biodegradable products. This initiative marks a step forward in Chennai’s community-driven efforts toward reducing waste and fostering sustainable consumer behavior.
