Biotech Start-up Melt&Marble Secures €7.3 Million to Launch Sustainable, Animal-Free Fats

Gothenburg-based Melt&Marble, a Swedish biotech company specializing in sustainable fats, has successfully raised €7.3 million in a Series A funding round. The fresh capital will accelerate the production scale-up and market introduction of their pioneering “designer fats” – animal-free, high-performance alternatives to conventional oils and fats used in personal care and food products.

Pioneering Precision Fermentation for Sustainable Fats

Founded in 2014 by microbial engineering specialists including Dr. Anastasia Krivoruchko, Melt&Marble uses precision fermentation technology to produce sustainable fats without relying on animals or environmentally problematic palm oil. Their innovative ingredients aim to cater to diverse sectors such as health and beauty, meat and dairy alternatives, and specialized nutrition, delivering both superior performance and environmental benefits.

Strategic Investors and Commercialization Roadmap

The Series A round was led by Industrifonden, a Swedish deep-tech investor, with significant participation from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund, and strategic partners such as Beiersdorf and Valio. Additional support came from Chalmers Ventures and Catalyze Capital.

CEO Dr. Krivoruchko highlighted the funding as a pivotal step toward market launch, emphasizing completed scalability milestones and strong strategic collaborations. Melt&Marble plans to debut its first ingredients commercially in personal care applications by 2026, with ambitions to enter the U.S. food market subsequently.

Industry Outlook and Collaboration

Valio’s vice-president Susanna Kallio noted the crucial role of cellular agriculture in the future food ecosystem, praising Melt&Marble’s fats as promising tools for innovation on retail shelves and a sustainable food system transformation. This underscores growing industry momentum toward sustainable, cell-based agricultural products.
