Nearly Half of U.S. Consumers Purchase Sustainable Products, Survey Finds
A recent survey by GlobeScan, featured on Trellis, reveals a growing trend among American consumers favoring environmentally-friendly products. Conducted between March 25-28, 2025, the study surveyed over 1,000 U.S. consumers, uncovering key insights on sustainability purchasing behaviors.
Key Findings
- 49% of Americans reported purchasing a sustainable product in the last month, marking a 6-point increase from 43% recorded before the 2024 U.S. election.
- Only 15% of respondents expressed no interest in buying environmentally-friendly products.
- More than one-third of consumers wanted to purchase sustainable products but were limited by barriers such as high prices, lack of awareness, and limited product availability.
Consumers generally identify sustainable products by recycled or recyclable packaging, recognized certifications or labels, and the use of eco-friendly materials and ingredients.
Implications for Brands and Retailers
Despite a sometimes challenging political landscape around environmental policies, consumer demand for sustainable goods is rising and resilient. Brands that provide accessible, credible, and transparent sustainable options stand to gain long-term customer loyalty and increased market share.
This demand-driven momentum highlights the importance of:
- Making sustainable products widely available and affordable.
- Clearly communicating the environmental benefits and credentials of products.
- Responding to consumer values through genuine sustainability commitments.
By addressing these factors, businesses can meet substantial unmet demand and position themselves as leaders in the growing market for eco-conscious products.
