How Lowe’s Embeds Sustainability in Home Improvements
Lowe’s Companies, a leading American home improvement retailer, has made significant strides in embedding sustainability within its operations, product offerings, and community initiatives. Recognized as 60th in Sustainability Magazine’s Top 250 World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2025, Lowe’s demonstrates a strong commitment to reducing environmental impact while supporting customers and professionals in making greener home improvements.
Sustainability Strategy and Net Zero Goals
Lowe’s sustainability roadmap is ambitious, targeting net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 across Scopes 1, 2, and 3. The company aims for a minimum of 90% reduction in emissions combined with offsetting any residual emissions. Intermediate targets for 2030 include:
- 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions
- 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions (compared to a 2021 baseline)
Key pillars of this strategy include:
- Electrification: Moving away from fossil fuels to electricity
- Efficiency: Lowering energy consumption in operations
- Renewable Energy: Utilizing solar, wind, and other renewables to power facilities and products
By the end of 2024, Lowe’s will have installed rooftop solar panels on more than 100 stores across California, Illinois, and New Jersey. These installations collectively generate over 100 million kilowatt-hours annually, enough to power more than 6,500 homes. Chris Cassell, Lowe’s Vice President of Corporate Sustainability, highlights that investing in renewable energy "lowers operating costs" and reduces emissions across stores and distribution centers.
Sustainable Product Initiatives
Lowe’s prioritizes sustainable product development and supply chain integrity, focusing on:
- Making all private brand packaging recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2030
- Ensuring 100% of wood products are responsibly sourced by 2025
As of 2023, 81% of Lowe’s wood products were responsibly sourced, and 96% of strategic suppliers set sustainability goals aligned with Lowe’s commitments. The company’s wood sourcing policy addresses risks such as deforestation, illegal harvesting, endangered species protection, human rights, and corruption.
To further environmental stewardship, Lowe’s invested nearly $500,000 in reforestation projects across North America and Vietnam in 2024, supporting carbon sequestration and biodiversity in critical regions.
Chairman and CEO Marvin Ellison emphasizes the company’s philosophy of “doing well by doing good,” which drives both shareholder value and positive social-environmental outcomes through operational excellence.
Advancing Circularity and Waste Reduction
Lowe’s sustainability efforts extend beyond sourcing and manufacturing to product lifecycle management. The company advocates for a circular economy, focusing on waste prevention by collaborating with suppliers to design products with minimized environmental impact from raw material extraction through end-of-life.
By embedding sustainability across product design, facility operations, and community projects, Lowe’s ensures it plays a key role in fostering greener home improvements and building resilient, low-impact supply chains.
