How Lowe’s Embeds Sustainability in Home Improvements

By Lucy Potter | December 12, 2025

Lowe’s Companies leads American home improvement. It builds sustainability into daily work, products, and communities. It earns praise and ranks 60th in the Top 250 World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2025 by Sustainability Magazine.

Sustainability Strategy and Net Zero Ambitions

Lowe’s commits to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The goal spans Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. The company targets a 42% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 25% cut in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 from a 2021 baseline. It will lower nearly 90% of its emissions and offset the rest.

The plan rests on three pillars:

  • Electrification: Shifting operations from fossil fuels to electricity.
  • Efficiency: Cutting energy use in stores and distribution centers.
  • Renewable Energy: Investing in solar, wind, and other clean sources.

By the end of 2024, more than 100 Lowe’s stores in California, Illinois, and New Jersey use rooftop solar panels. These panels produce over 100 million kilowatt-hours each year, enough for 6,500 homes. Chris Cassell, VP of Corporate Sustainability, notes that renewable energy lowers operating costs and reduces harm.

Sustainable Products and Supply Chain Initiatives

Lowe’s builds sustainable products with clear goals. It aims for 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable private brand packaging by 2030. It seeks to source 100% of its wood products responsibly by 2025. In 2023, 81% of its wood came from responsible sources, and 96% of key suppliers set sustainability targets. Its wood policy stops deforestation, illegal logging, and protects endangered species and human rights. In 2024, Lowe’s invested nearly $500,000 in reforestation in North America and Vietnam to boost carbon capture and biodiversity.

Chairman and CEO Marvin Ellison ties doing well with doing good by linking sustainability to environmental care and shareholder value.

Advancing the Circular Economy

Lowe’s practices a circular economy by working with suppliers on waste-free designs. It minimizes waste from raw materials to product disposal. The company pushes waste prevention as the best way to reduce environmental impact and support a circular cycle.
