Promoting Sustainable and Inclusive Value Chains from Community Level in Viet Nam

Overview of the “Fair for All” Project

Oxfam in Viet Nam, in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and local organisations, has spearheaded a significant initiative titled the “Fair for All” project spanning 2021 to 2025. This project focuses on advancing sustainable and inclusive trade and agricultural value chains by empowering communities, protecting the environment, and fostering equitable economic participation.

Key Objectives and Impact

Funded by the Dutch government, the project aims to:

  • Center sustainable development on people and the planet.
  • Support green livelihoods and circular economy models.
  • Strengthen women’s economic autonomy.
  • Enhance inclusive business practices at the grassroots level.
  • Promote environmental protection alongside economic development.

Pham Quang Tu, Deputy Country Director of Oxfam in Viet Nam, highlighted the project’s success in integrating women and ethnic minorities into agricultural value chains and environmental initiatives. The project has bolstered civil society organisation capacities and influenced development approaches towards sustainability.

Implementation Models

The “Fair for All” project has been applied in various localities through representative initiatives, including:

  • Supporting agricultural livelihoods linked to value chains.
  • Improving mining communities’ welfare via agricultural product development.
  • Integrating agriculture and tourism for multi-value community benefits.
  • Mitigating environmental impacts from resource extraction in Ca Mau, collaborating with UEL – Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Empowering female members of People’s Councils in Quang Tri Province to participate actively in governance.

Multistakeholder Cooperation and Future Prospects

Gribnau Fleur, First Secretary Economic Affairs at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Viet Nam, praised the project as a prime example of effective multi-sector collaboration involving government, businesses, civil society, and academia. She reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment to support Viet Nam’s transition towards a green, circular economy that prioritises community well-being.

Although the project concludes in 2025, stakeholders agree that its outcomes provide a strong foundation for ongoing cooperation to promote sustainable, inclusive, and responsible agricultural value chains across Viet Nam.
