How Lowe’s Embeds Sustainability in Home Improvements

Lowe’s Companies, a leading American home improvement retailer, has integrated sustainability deeply into its operations, products, and overall strategy. Recognized as 60th in Sustainability Magazine’s Top 250 World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2025, Lowe’s is actively transforming its business to address environmental and social responsibilities.

Sustainability Strategy Overview

Lowe’s is committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions. The company aims for:

  • A minimum 90% reduction in emissions and full offset of residual emissions by 2050.
  • Short-term goals of a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 (using 2021 as baseline).

Key Focus Areas

  1. Electrification: Transitioning operations from fossil fuels to electricity.
  2. Efficiency: Decreasing energy consumption in all operational aspects.
  3. Renewable Energy: Utilizing solar, wind, and other renewable sources to power stores and equipment.

By the end of 2024, Lowe’s had installed rooftop solar panels on over 100 stores across California, Illinois, and New Jersey. This portfolio generates over 100 million kilowatt-hours annually — enough to power approximately 6,500 homes.

Sustainable Products and Supply Chain

Lowe’s prioritizes sustainability in its product offerings:

  • Packaging Goal: 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging for all private brands by 2030.
  • Wood Sourcing: Responsible sourcing of 100% of wood products by 2025. In 2023, 81% of wood products met responsible sourcing standards.
  • Supplier Engagement: 96% of strategic suppliers have established sustainability targets.

The company’s wood sourcing policy considers risks such as deforestation, illegal harvesting, endangered species protection, human rights, and corruption. In 2024, Lowe’s invested nearly US$500,000 in reforestation projects across Canada, the US, and Vietnam, enhancing carbon sequestration and biodiversity.

Advancing Circular Economy

Lowe’s aims to minimize waste by preventing its generation upfront, collaborating with suppliers to design products for sustainability throughout their lifecycle—from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. This approach supports a circular economy and reduces environmental impacts in the consumer use phase.

Leadership Insights

Chris Cassell, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability, emphasizes operational responsibility and the importance of renewable energy investments in lowering emissions and operating costs. Chairman and CEO Marvin Ellison highlights the blend of social, environmental, and economic goals, reinforcing that sustainability is integral to delivering value to shareholders and exemplary service to customers.

Lowe’s sustainable home improvement initiatives showcase a comprehensive approach combining renewable energy use, supply chain responsibility, and circular product design. Their measurable targets and concrete actions set valuable industry benchmarks in sustainability leadership.
