Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and EU Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products: Key Insights from KPMG ESG Webinar
On March 26, 2025, the KPMG ESG & Sustainability Consulting team held a webinar. They focused on better product practices. They used Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the new EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. The team asked clear questions. They asked how to measure and cut the environmental impact of everyday products. This issue grows as EU rules get tougher on sustainability.
Understanding Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The webinar’s first part used LCA methods to track a product’s life. These methods start with raw materials and end with disposal. Experts Nina Mihajlović and Marijana Marjanović spoke clearly. They explained:
- Emissions differ at the company and product levels.
- The simple steps of an LCA follow global standards.
- How to build and use Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
- Straightforward ways to compute a product’s carbon footprint.
This method gives firms clear data. It helps them spot environmental hotspots. It prompts them to make targeted changes.
EU Ecodesign Regulation and Digital Product Passports
The second part looked at the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. This rule forces each product to meet new green standards. The rule aims to lower resource use and emissions. Participants learned that compliance needs detailed environmental profiles. They also learned about clear records in the supply chain.
A new idea, the Digital Product Passport, was shared. This digital record holds each product’s sustainability data. It makes tracking easier. It supports a circular economy. It boosts resource management and consumer trust.
Relevance and Impact
Many people joined the webinar. Their strong interest shows that LCA and Ecodesign matter. These methods are key when EU rules affect more markets. Companies must use these ideas. Doing so helps them meet laws and support global green goals.
Conclusion and Next Steps
This webinar closed the first series of KPMG’s online ESG seminars. It gave firms useful tools to cut their environmental impact. For businesses in Montenegro and nearby regions, using LCA and Ecodesign is a smart move. It drives sustainable product innovation and readies them for new rules.
