The Unwaste Shop Expands Sustainable Living to Beverly, Chicago

Promoting Zero-Waste Lifestyle on the South Side

The Unwaste Shop, a pioneering zero-waste store originally rooted in Chicago’s West Loop, has opened a second location in Beverly, South Side Chicago, aiming to make sustainable living more accessible to local residents. Co-owners Todd Barancik and Beverly neighborhood resident Randi Alexander launched the new store at 1915 W. 103rd St. on November 28, 2025. ## Sustainable Alternatives to Everyday Items

Dedicated to reducing single-use plastics, The Unwaste Shop offers a wide range of eco-friendly products, from bath and beauty items to pantry staples and household cleaning supplies. A key feature is the refill station, where customers bring their own containers to refill dry goods and household essentials, helping to cut down on packaging waste.

Origins and Community Integration

Founded in 2021 as a pop-up in West Town by local performers Jessica Naimy and Ben Mayne, the store was acquired by Barancik in 2022, who teamed up with Alexander to grow its sustainable mission. Alexander’s commitment to environmental stewardship began during extensive travels across the U.S., where she witnessed the scale of waste firsthand.

The Beverly shop partners with local organizations such as Reduce Waste Chicago and EcoShip to further community waste reduction efforts. Current initiatives include collecting non-working holiday string lights and reusable shipping materials.

Community Engagement and Events

The Unwaste Shop emphasizes inclusivity and ease in adopting sustainable habits. “We want people to feel comfortable here no matter where they are,” Alexander stressed, highlighting a non-judgmental environment aiming to make sustainability practical for all.

Upcoming programming includes a Do It Yourself Bookmaking Workshop on January 24, 2026, led by artist Kelly Laughlin, focusing on traditional bookbinding with all materials provided.
