Belmont’s Yes! Your Eco Source: A Shop with a Mission to Reduce Waste
A new general store in downtown Belmont, Yes! Your Eco Source, is dedicated to reducing single-use plastic waste by offering eco-friendly, fair trade products with minimal or zero packaging.
Bulk Refills and Sustainable Packaging
Co-founders Ceilidh Yurenka and Kate Bositis designed the store around bulk refill options for personal care (shampoo, face wash, lotion) and home cleaning products (laundry detergent, dishwasher soap). Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers or purchase reusable containers for repeated refills, drastically cutting down plastic waste from large disposable containers.
Additionally, the shop sells everyday essentials like toothpaste tabs, deodorant, and lip balm packaged in cardboard or other recyclable, compostable materials. Other sustainable items include refillable floss dispensers, reusable utensils, beeswax food wraps, and paper towels.
Unique Upcycled and Fair Trade Products
Local artisans contribute upcycled hats and mittens made from old sweaters, while Ten Thousand Villages provides bowls made from recycled keys and hooks crafted from refurbished bicycle chains. All vendors comply with fair trade practices, ensuring fair pricing and ethical production that aligns with the store’s environmental goals.
Commitment to Environmental Impact
Inspired by the staggering number of disposable toothpaste tubes discarded annually, Yurenka founded the store to provide accessible alternatives that reduce plastic consumption. Bositis highlights that their vendor selection process carefully considers who makes the products, materials used, place of manufacture, packaging, and end-of-life disposal.
Together, the co-founders hope to empower the community in Belmont and beyond to lessen their environmental footprint, embracing a philosophy akin to Mother Teresa’s: small individual actions can collectively make a significant impact.
