Preparing for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): WBCSD’s Readiness Assessment Tool
On April 16, 2025, the European Commission moved to boost sustainable product policies. The Commission adopted the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030. This plan centers on the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The ESPR will set common rules for product durability, reparability, and recyclability in the EU.
What is the Readiness Assessment Tool?
WBCSD and ERM made a Readiness Assessment Tool to help companies get ready for ESPR. The tool helps businesses by letting them check if they have the right product data for ESPR. It shows where they lack information and where to act early. It also points out which product groups match the next Delegated Acts under ESPR.
Features and Benefits
-
Comprehensive Coverage:
The tool covers both performance and data rules found in Articles 6 and 7 of the ESPR. It organizes this information by product features and lifecycle stages. -
User-Friendly Interface:
The tool runs on an easy-to-use Excel platform. It asks for data and quickly gives an overview of readiness. -
Future-Proofing:
It also helps businesses see and plan for Digital Product Passport (DPP) rules. This will make transparency and traceability better. -
Upcoming Functionality:
In future updates, you will be able to filter the data by product category for more focused checks.
Broader Context: Circularity Data Exchange (CDX)
WBCSD uses the Circularity Data Exchange (CDX) to improve how circular economy data is shared. This work boosts ESPR compliance and sparks innovation in sustainable design and lifecycle management.
