Sprouts Launches “Rescued Organics” Program to Promote Imperfect Organic Produce
Natural and organic grocer Sprouts Farmers Market has introduced an initiative called Rescued Organics, aimed at selling imperfect organic produce that would normally go to waste. This program initially rolls out across all 130 Sprouts locations in California and plans expansion to other stores in the future.
Key Objectives:
- Reduce Food Waste: According to Sprouts, approximately 5 billion meals worth of edible food is left unharvested on farms yearly. The new program seeks to redirect these imperfect but nutritious fruits and vegetables to consumers rather than landfills.
- Support Local Growers: Small-scale farmers often face economic challenges because imperfect produce is harder to sell. Sprouts aims to improve growers’ profitability by purchasing and promoting these items.
- Make Organic More Affordable: Rescued Organics products will be offered at reduced prices, making organic produce accessible to a broader demographic without compromising quality or taste.
Product Range:
The initial lineup includes 12 varieties such as potatoes, onions, grapefruit, lemons, oranges, pears, carrots, kiwi, and bell peppers. Though these items may be misshapen, undersized, or slightly off in color, they retain the same nutrient profile as standard produce.
Industry Context:
Sprouts joins other retailers and online grocers capitalizing on the growing demand for “ugly” or imperfect produce. Notable examples include subscription services offered by Imperfect Foods and Misfits Market. Past attempts by traditional grocers, such as Price Chopper and Hannaford, faced hurdles related to quality consistency and consumer interest.
Company Footprint:
With over 370 stores across 23 states, Sprouts expands its sustainability efforts through this program, aligning with its broader mission of health, affordability, and environmental responsibility.
Quote from Sprouts Leadership:
Nick Konat, Sprouts president and COO, emphasized, “The Sprouts Rescued Organics program is designed to help address the problem of food waste, benefiting both farmers and customers.”
