Marolda Farms Expands into Organic Figs, Amplifies Sustainable Practices

Marolda Farms Inc., a family-owned operation based in Vineland, NJ, is gaining momentum in the organic produce market through significant expansion and innovation. Known for cultivating leafy greens and herbs on nearly 400 acres, the farm has grown its organic footprint from a modest five acres in 2008 to over 120 acres today, with an additional 30 acres added in 2024 alone.

Organic Growth Driven by Market Trends and Leadership

Richard Marolda Jr., the farm’s production manager and leader of its organic initiatives under the Rock & Roll Organics label, highlights the growing consumer demand for organic produce. “The market itself puts out its annual numbers for produce sales and the organic sales increase year over year, so that trend is really promising,” Marolda Jr. remarks. He notes the region’s rising appeal post-COVID and sees organic farming as a strategic opportunity for sustainable growth, despite higher costs and management challenges.

Introducing Organic Figs and Passionfruit

Marking a key innovation for 2024, Marolda Farms is launching a new line of organic figs under the Rock & Roll Organics brand—a unique venture within their current offerings. Additionally, the farm is experimenting with organic passionfruit to diversify its organic portfolio further.

Commitment to Certifications and Regenerative Agriculture

To enhance its sustainability credentials and meet customer expectations, Marolda Farms is pursuing fair labor certification and the PrimusGFS food safety audit in 2024. These certifications align with their ongoing commitment to regenerative agriculture practices, such as cover cropping and reduced synthetic fertilizer usage.

Marolda Jr. shares, “I’m leaning really hard into regenerative practices,” mentioning recent investments like a roller crimper and plans to integrate crimping systems in vegetable production. The farm also employs Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, including crop rotation and organic fertilization, to sustainably manage pests and soil health.

A Forward-Thinking Organic Leader

Combining rich family tradition with modern sustainability practices, Marolda Farms is poised for continued growth in organic produce. Their expansion into unique crops like organic figs and dedication to certifications and regenerative methods exemplify their leadership in fostering a resilient, environmentally responsible farming future.
