Marolda Farms Expands Organic Portfolio with New Fig Line
Marolda Farms Inc., a family-owned agricultural operation based in Vineland, New Jersey, is deepening its commitment to organic produce. With nearly 400 acres dedicated to leafy greens and herbs, the farm has steadily grown its organic footprint from just five acres in 2008 to over 120 acres today, under the leadership of production manager Richard Marolda Jr.
Organic Growth and Market Opportunity
Richard Marolda Jr., who spearheads the organic program branded as Rock & Roll Organics, highlights the increasing consumer demand for organic produce and the promising market trends driving expansion. “The market itself puts out its annual numbers for produce sales and the organic sales increase year over year,” he noted, further emphasizing the region’s growing reputation as a key production area post-COVID.
Despite the higher costs and challenges associated with organic farming, Marolda Jr. affirmed the better margins and the strategic advantage of having a retail label from the outset. This foundation supports Marolda Farms’ continuous increase in organic acreage and product diversity.
Launching Organic Figs and Exploring Passionfruit
A major highlight for 2024 is the introduction of organic figs under the Rock & Roll Organics banner—a niche not widely cultivated in the region, offering fresh market potential. Additionally, the farm is experimenting with organic passionfruit, signaling its drive toward innovative organic crops.
Commitment to Certifications and Regenerative Practices
Marolda Farms is pursuing fair labor certification and the PrimusGFS food safety audit in 2024, reflecting responsiveness to customer interests and industry best practices. These certifications dovetail with the farm’s focus on regenerative agriculture—a method Marolda Jr. has actively integrated, including cover cropping and using a roller crimper to enhance soil health and crop rotation.
Sustainable Inputs and Integrated Pest Management
The farm employs robust Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies such as crop rotation, cover crops, multiple seeding, and off-season manure applications to manage pests and diseases in both organic and conventional systems. Moreover, it is phasing out synthetic fertilizers in favor of organic alternatives, underscoring its sustainability commitment.
Looking Ahead
Marolda Farms blends deep agricultural tradition with progressive organic practices to position itself at the forefront of sustainable produce growing. Their expansion into organic figs and ongoing innovation in certifications and regenerative methods signal a promising future aligned with evolving consumer and environmental demands.
