Marolda Farms Expands Organic Offerings with New Fig Line and Sustainable Practices
Marolda Farms Inc., a family-owned operation based in Vineland, New Jersey, is deepening its commitment to organic agriculture, building on a strong legacy of growing leafy greens and herbs both conventionally and organically across nearly 400 acres. Led by Rich and Sherry Marolda with their son Richard Marolda Jr. as production manager, the farm has grown its organic acreage from an initial five acres in 2008 to over 120 acres today, cultivating key organic products such as cilantro, dill, and parsley under the Rock & Roll Organics label.
Strategic Growth in Organics with New Crops
In 2024, Marolda Farms is set to launch an organic fig line, a pioneering move in their region that sets them apart in the organic produce market. Additionally, the farm is exploring organic passionfruit cultivation, emphasizing their forward-thinking approach to diversifying organic crop offerings. Richard Marolda Jr. notes the organic market’s strong year-over-year growth and improved margins despite higher production costs, aligning with consumer and retailer demand especially post-COVID.
Commitment to Sustainability and Certifications
Marolda Farms is actively pursuing new certifications including Fair Labor and PrimusGFS food safety audits, driven by customer interest and the farm’s dedication to future-proofing operations. The Fair Labor certification complements their existing embrace of regenerative agriculture practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, and organic fertilization. This year’s investments include acquiring a roller crimper for advanced soil management techniques, aiming to integrate these methods further into vegetable production.
Marolda Jr. highlights a gradual phase-out of synthetic fertilizers on conventional crops in favor of organic alternatives, reinforcing the farm’s integrated pest management focus and sustainable stewardship.
Looking Ahead
With a balance of tradition and innovation, Marolda Farms’ expansion into organic figs and passionfruit, combined with enhanced sustainability certifications and regenerative practices, positions the farm to capitalize on the growing organic produce market. As Richard Marolda Jr. states, “When you’re getting a resurgence of business, organics present a real opportunity to grow with the market.”
