Maximize Your Compliance: The Ultimate Readiness Assessment Tool for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)

Preparing for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): WBCSD Readiness Assessment Tool

On April 16, 2025, the European Commission launched the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030, advancing the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) agenda. This initiative aims to establish sustainability as the norm for products sold in the EU by introducing mandatory standards focused on durability, reparability, recyclability, and other eco-friendly criteria.

What is the ESPR Readiness Assessment Tool?

In response, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), in partnership with ERM, developed a Readiness Assessment Tool that empowers companies to evaluate their preparedness for upcoming ESPR compliance demands. This Excel-based tool enables businesses to:

  • Assess the availability of critical product data required by ESPR.
  • Identify gaps in product sustainability information early on.
  • Evaluate readiness based on product aspects and lifecycle stages outlined in Articles 5(1), 6, and 7 of the ESPR.
  • Prepare proactively for the forthcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP) requirements.

How the Tool Works

The tool adopts a step-by-step approach, guiding users through inputs that cover both performance and information requirements. It generates a high-level readiness assessment, highlighting strengths and improvement areas to facilitate smoother compliance transitions.

Future Developments

WBCSD is further enhancing this effort through the Circularity Data Exchange (CDX) platform. This will support better sharing and accessibility of circularity data, making it easier for companies to meet ESPR’s evolving performance and information disclosure standards.

Access and Support

The Readiness Assessment Tool is available for download on the WBCSD website, encouraging companies across industries to prepare for and align with ESPR’s rigorous sustainability expectations.
