Greenwashing Concerns Hinder Consumer Confidence in Sustainable Finance Products

A recent survey by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) shows that consumers do not trust sustainable finance products. The survey connects fears of greenwashing with unclear product standards. Over 10,000 people from 11 European countries, such as Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain, share this worry. They call for clear rules and honest information in sustainable finance.

    Twenty-seven percent invested in sustainable products. Forty-one percent are ready to invest later. Fifty-five percent say they were never offered these options.
  • Demand for Positive Impact:
    Eighty-six percent of interested buyers want investments to help the environment. Seventy-one percent wish their money supports changes in high-emission sectors.
  • Barriers to Investment:
    Thirty-four percent avoid these products because green claims mislead them. Fifty-two percent feel lost when they compare regular investments to sustainable ones.
  • Information Gap:
    Forty-five percent say information on a product’s sustainability falls short.
  • Support for Regulation:
    Seventy-six percent ask for strict rules to show what counts as sustainable. Sixty-seven percent want easy access to these products for all retail investors.

Expert Commentary

Agustín Reyna, Director General of BEUC, insists that sustainable finance must move past simple marketing words. He says, “These products must meet strict standards, not include harmful investments like fossil fuels, and help build a sustainable economy.” Reyna adds that clear and honest sustainable finance products connect consumer trust with the EU’s green goals.
