NN Group Advances Sustainable Procurement in Operations

NN Group is a leading international financial services company. It now procures products and services that are more sustainable. The group cares about its wider sustainability aims. It spends a lot each year on procurement and works with many suppliers. NN Group drives environmental benefits by controlling its supply chain.

Focus on High-Impact Procurement Categories

The company lists IT, consultancy, and facility management as top categories. It ranks these by both carbon intensity and spend. Two-thirds of these emissions come from suppliers that serve Dutch business units. NN Group targets these areas to make a positive impact.

Transition from Spend-Based to Supplier-Specific Emissions Reporting

NN Group currently uses spend-based reporting for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The group plans to collect specific data from each supplier next. This shift helps it check each supplier’s commitment and progress to lower emissions. Many suppliers already follow the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) or share sustainability figures. More detailed data will make monitoring easier.

Responsible Procurement Approach & Supplier ESG Engagement Program

In 2024, NN Group started its responsible procurement work. It began in Dutch units, then aims to expand in 2025 and 2026. A key step is the Supplier ESG Engagement Programme. This programme checks supplier climate targets, transition plans, and emissions reports. NN Group aims to cover at least 35% of its spend with this effort by the end of 2025.
For existing suppliers not meeting standards, NN Group asks for enhanced climate actions. For new suppliers, the company adds sustainability criteria (like emissions measurement and net-zero targets) in contracts. NN Group reviews progress when contracts are renewed.

Collaborative Decarbonization to Influence the Real Economy

NN Group works with higher emitting suppliers to help them decarbonize. The company prefers to engage rather than cut ties immediately. Still, it sets clear minimum requirements and timelines. NN Group may not renew contracts if improvements are insufficient. This plan aims to help reach net-zero goals in the real economy.
