The Unwaste Shop Brings Sustainable Living to Beverly, Chicago
Expanding Eco-Friendly Alternatives to Chicago’s South Side
The Unwaste Shop is a zero-waste store. It opened its second location in Beverly on November 28, 2025. Beverly resident Randi Alexander and Todd Barancik own the shop. They opened it after a successful West Loop store. The store sits at 1915 W. 103rd St. It brings eco-friendly options closer to South Side residents. The shop offers alternatives to single-use plastics and everyday items.
Offering Zero-Waste Essentials and Refill Stations
The shop sells many eco-friendly products. It offers bath, body, beauty, cleaning, laundry items and dry goods. A refill station stands out. Customers bring their own containers. This helps to reduce plastic waste. Alexander adds that they want to end single-use plastics. She says the shop makes sustainable choices easier to use.
Origins and Philosophy
The shop began as a pop-up in 2021. Broadway performers in West Town started it. Todd Barancik acquired the pop-up in early 2022. Later that year, Alexander joined him. Her love for sustainability grew during a long cross-country trip. On her journey, she saw how much waste fills daily life. Now, she and Barancik run the Beverly location. They work to make green living simple for everyone, despite the challenges.
Community Engagement and Events
The Unwaste Shop works with local groups like Reduce Waste Chicago and EcoShip. They join forces for community climate action. The shop also collects non-working holiday string lights and used shipping materials. These materials get a new life in the shop.
The store will hold a Do It Yourself Bookmaking Workshop on January 24, 2026. Kelly Laughlin, the founder of Odette Press, will lead the workshop. The event shows how old materials can be reused in creative ways. All workshop supplies are provided. Tickets can be bought on the shop’s website.
Inclusive and Supportive Environment
Alexander says the shop welcomes everyone. It does not judge if you are new to sustainable living. The shop is a friendly space for learning and growing greener together.
