The Unwaste Shop Expands Sustainable Living Options to Beverly Neighborhood
Bringing Zero-Waste Living to Chicago’s South Side
The Unwaste Shop, a growing sustainable living retailer originally founded as a pop-up in West Town in 2021, has opened a second location in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood as of November 28, 2025. Co-owners Todd Barancik and Beverly resident Randi Alexander aim to make eco-friendly living more accessible to South Side residents by offering zero-waste products and refill options, helping reduce reliance on single-use plastics.
A Mission Rooted in Community and Environmental Awareness
Randi Alexander’s passion for sustainability began during extensive travels across 35 states, where she witnessed widespread waste generation. Her personal journey evolved into professional commitment after working with zero-waste food services in Chicago. Partnering with Barancik, Alexander now manages the Beverly storefront while Barancik oversees the original West Loop location.
“Our goal is to try and eliminate single-use plastics and provide sustainable alternatives for everyday items,” Alexander emphasizes. The Beverly shop stocks a diverse range of eco-friendly goods—including bath, body, beauty products, dry pantry goods, cleaning supplies, and laundry essentials—all designed to support low-waste lifestyles.
Community Engagement and Collaborative Efforts
The Unwaste Shop actively partners with local nonprofit organizations such as Reduce Waste Chicago, which focuses on climate change mitigation through waste reduction, and EcoShip, a group facilitating the reuse of shipping materials. Notably, the Beverly location is currently collecting non-working holiday string lights and used shipping materials for repurposing.
Education and Inclusivity
To further foster sustainable habits, The Unwaste Shop will host a Do It Yourself Bookmaking Workshop on January 24, 2026, led by artist Kelly Laughlin, founder of Odette Press. This hands-on event invites participants to create soft-cover journals with all materials provided, supporting community engagement with creative reuse.
Co-owner Alexander welcomes all experience levels to the shop with a no-judgment ethos, aiming to demystify sustainable living and make it attainable and convenient for everyone.
