Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the EU Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products – Key Insights from KPMG Webinar
On March 26, 2025, KPMG’s ESG & Sustainability Consulting team held a webinar. They focused on two tasks: measuring a product’s full life cycle and following the EU Ecodesign rules. The team showed simple steps to lower the harm products cause our world.
Understanding Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The webinar began with a look at LCA. LCA is one way to track a product’s impact from start to end. Experts Nina Mihajlović and Marijana Marjanović explained these points:
- Emission Variability: They compared how emissions differ at the company level and at the product level.
- LCA Process: They broke down the steps to do a strong LCA.
- Compliance Standards: They listed the world rules that support a clear LCA.
- Environmental Product Declarations (EPD): They showed how EPDs share clear facts on a product’s impact.
New EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation
The webinar then explained the new EU rules to boost product care. Key points were:
- Product Carbon Footprint Calculation: They offered practical ways to measure a product’s carbon output.
- Digital Product Passport: This tool is key for clear tracking in green supply chains.
- Regulatory Relevance: The rules now affect both EU companies and those from other regions. Local firms must also meet stronger green tests.
Industry Implications and Future Outlook
This webinar ended the first set of KPMG ESG web seminars. The speakers stressed that firms must use life cycle ideas and follow strict rules. As the EU makes the rules firmer, using LCA and ecodesign ideas is a must. This helps companies build products that are fair, smart, and green.
For firms that want to follow new green rules and boost product care, these ideas serve as a valuable guide for planning and change.
