Readiness Assessment Tool: Preparing for the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)
Overview
On April 16, 2025, the European Commission released the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030. The Commission stresses sustainable product design under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). This regulation pushes for stronger durability, easier repair, better recyclability, and aims to make sustainable products the norm in the EU market. New Delegated Acts will support these goals.
To help businesses meet these higher standards, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and ERM made a Readiness Assessment Tool. This tool checks if companies have key product data in order, so they can get ready for the ESPR.
What the Readiness Assessment Tool Offers
- Assessment Scope: The tool covers performance and information duties set out in Articles 6 and 7 of the ESPR.
- Product & Lifecycle Focus: It checks product features (Article 5(1)) and reviews several lifecycle stages.
- User-Friendly Interface: The tool comes as an Excel file. Businesses enter their current product data directly.
- Gap Identification: The tool finds weak spots in data and reporting early. This helps companies act before a problem grows.
- Future Updates: More filtering options will appear for specific product groups when new Delegated Acts go live.
- Digital Product Passport (DPP) Readiness: The tool helps companies meet digital rules that boost data clarity on product sustainability.
Strategic Importance
This tool helps companies adjust quickly to the EU’s new rules. Early alignment lowers risk and speeds up the shift toward a circular economy. The tool works well with projects like WBCSD’s Circularity Data Exchange (CDX). CDX makes circularity data easier to access and share, which supports both regulatory and environmental goals.
