Advancing Sustainability Through the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)
Overview of the Ecodesign Forum
On February 19–20, 2025, Brussels hosted the first meeting of the Ecodesign Forum. The forum drives the work to implement the ESPR. It gathers nearly 130 experts. These experts come from EU Member States, industry, NGOs, and academia. They work together to shape rules for product design and energy labels so that every word links closely with the next.
Objectives and Importance of ESPR
The ESPR aims to:
- Grow the EU market by matching product rules in all Member States
- Improve the sustainability of products
- Cut down energy use
- Boost a circular economy
- Strengthen industrial competitiveness
- Support new ideas in sustainable product design
By setting clear standards for ecodesign and energy labels, the rule cuts market barriers and creates fair ground. This design clearly shows that the EU leads in sustainable product policies.
Priority Products and Measures
At the first meeting, the forum discussed a draft plan. The plan lists the top product groups and horizontal measures for the next five years. This plan awaits final approval by the Commission.
Priority product groups include:
- Textiles (apparel)
- Furniture
- Steel and aluminium
- Tyres
- Energy-related products (from older Ecodesign plans)
Two main measures are set:
- Repairability, with clear scoring methods
- Recyclability and use of recycled material in electrical and electronic devices
New rules will soon ban the destruction of unsold products. The forthcoming acts detail standard rules and disclosure tasks for economic operators.
Implementation Timeline and Process
Key dates include:
- April 2025: Adoption of the first ESPR and Energy Labelling Working Plan
- July 2025: Adoption of acts to stop the destruction of unsold products
Future ecodesign rules will arise from studies, impact reviews, and talks with stakeholders. The process stays open and fair. It also helps small and medium-sized enterprises. Each step links ideas closely to make the rules clear and useful for the environment.
EU Leadership Statements
Commissioner Jessika Roswall said the ESPR stands for innovation, sustainability, and economic growth. Her words link the idea of a circular economy with benefits to both the environment and industry.
Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné stressed that the Forum will bring strong, real measures. His statement ties waste reduction with better resource use. He feels positive as all experts work closely together.

Summary:
The launch of the Ecodesign Forum marks a key move in putting the ESPR into action. This regulation aims to match sustainable product rules across the EU. By linking experts closely together and focusing on main products, repair, recyclability, and energy efficiency, the EU takes a firm step toward a circular economy. This approach also sparks new ideas and fair competition.
