Transforming Tribal Agriculture: The Rise of Organic Ginger Cultivation in Pachamalai

Organic Ginger Cultivation Empowers Tribal Farmers in Pachamalai

Transforming Tribal Agriculture through Sustainable Practices

The tribal community in Pachamalai hills is poised for an agricultural breakthrough with the expansion of organic ginger cultivation. Inspired by a successful pilot project, local farmers are now transitioning from traditional tapioca farming—which yields ₹5-7 per kilogram—to cultivating organic ginger, a high-value cash crop with promising market demand.

Pilot Project and Capacity Building Initiatives

Supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) under the "Hand in Hand" tribal development project, a group of tribespeople visited Kerala’s Wayanad district to learn about sustainable and profitable cash crops. Organic ginger was identified as an ideal crop for Pachamalai’s agro-climatic conditions.

In March 2020, prior to the COVID-19 lockdown, 20 farmers received quality ginger rhizome seeds from the Wayanad Vegetable and Fruits Cooperative Society. They were trained in organic farming techniques by the Hand in Hand India project team, focusing on sustainable cultivation methods to nurture soil health and crop quality.

Promising Yields and Expansion Plans

The hands-on trial yielded a high harvest after 8-9 months, exemplified by the successful crop of farmer Chandran from Nathilipatti. Encouraged by these results, over 100 farmers have signed up to start organic ginger cultivation this season.

Project Manager V.P. Elumalai announced plans to expand ginger farming to 100 acres within the Pachamalai hills, with cultivation set to begin in February and mature by November or December.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

Y. Joe, Vice-President of Hand in Hand, emphasized that organic ginger cultivation could multiply tribal farmers’ income by at least five times compared to tapioca. The shift to organic ginger is expected to bolster the local economy while restoring soil ecology—a critical factor for sustainable long-term agriculture.

With increasing production, Pachamalai’s tribal villages are destined to become a recognized hub for premium organic ginger, enhancing livelihood resilience and promoting environmentally responsible farming practices.
